So I like hot stuff. I’m not like, a dick about it. I don’t brag because there are people out there that can handle waaaay hotter foods than me. It’s not a competition.
So I’m at Tijuana Flats, a “mexican” food restaurant chain famous for their hot sauce bar. All in all, what they put out on the bar isn’t the spiciest stuff in the world, but you’ll find some delicious gems in there.
I immediately look at whatever is marked black as hottest for the day (they change them) and immediately go to pump some into the little paper containers provided when…
“Whooaaa, sweetheart you don’t want to do that,”
I turned around and there’s this skinny guy in jeans and a logo polo. There’s another dude wearing the same shirt, so they must have come here from some sad IT job. I’m a little taken aback at this dude’s presumption that I am ignorant to what I’m doing, but I blow it off.
”Nah, man, it’s got the black label, I haven’t tried this one yet.”
”Are you sure? It’s really spicy.”
”I’m pretty sure dude.”
”I don’t think you should, because it was a bit much for me.”
At this point I’m feeling patronized. I stare at him.
“It’s fine. Really.”
“Oooookay,” He says in this exasperated, don’t-say-I-didn’t-warn-you kind of voice. I get my hot sauce and sit down. Food arrives, I taste it with a chip first to test. It’s super sweet, actually. I dump the whole thing on my taco. I don’t know if he’s watching.
I go up to the counter and ask the manager to ring me up a bottle of the sauce to take home. It was pretty delicious! Manager says he’ll bring it to my table.
They bring it, I pay, and the server asks if I’m into hot sauces – of course I say yes. Hot Sauce Police is now watching. She brings me an assortment of sauces they do not serve at the bar because of liability reasons. One of them was rated at 1.5 million Scoville units. I bought all of them, signing the credit card slip as he watches.
I finished my meal.
Then I looked right at him and licked the fucking paper container when I was done.
It’s the two year anniversary of the incident.
“I KNOW WHAT I’M ABOUT, SON”
– This woman, not letting others tell her what her own Hot Sauce Limits are
Feinstein: You’re a big, powerful man. Why didn’t you [gestures pushing motion]?
Crews: Senator, as a black man in America [sigh]…
Feinstein: Say it as it is. I think it’s important.
Crews: …you only have a few shots at success. You only have a few chances to make yourself a viable member of the community. I’m from Flint, Michigan. I have seen many many young black men who were provoked into violence, and they were imprisoned, or they were killed, and they’re not here. My wife for years prepared me. She said, “If you ever get goaded, if you ever get prodded, if you ever have anyone try to push you into any kind of situation, don’t do it. Don’t be violent.” And she trained me. I’ll be honest with you it was the strength of my wife who trained me and told me, “If this situation happens, let’s leave.” And the training worked because I did not go into my first reaction, I grabbed her hand, we left, but the next day I went right to the agency. I have texts, I have phone conversations, and I said, “This is unacceptable!” And I told them how -you know- I almost got violent, but I didn’t. And I said, “What are you going to do about this predator that you have roaming your hallways?” And -you know- I was told, “We are going to do everything in our power. We are going to handle this Terry. You’re right. It is unacceptable.” And then they disappeared. Nothing happened.
Look at the faces of the black men behind him it says it all.
This is real fucking infuriating. This shit isn’t funny. Fuck them and anyone who makes fun of Terry Crews speaking out and taking a stand.
for those who don’t know the context, this is Terry Crews testifying about being sexually assaulted by Adam Venit during a Senate hearing about a proposed bill called the Sexual Assault Survivors Bill of Rights. While I don’t like that Senator Feinstein said what she said, I think it opened the door for a great statement from Terry about WHY he didn’t fight back – since so many people respond to male victims with “oh well you’re bigger than your rapist, why didn’t you push him or her off of you? why didn’t you punch him or her? did you want it or something?” And they don’t listen. Maybe finally people will listen.
This shows that anyone can be a victim of sexual assault, even a tall, strong, hulking guy like Terry Crews. And I hope him coming forward with his accusations convinces other victims to realize that it being a victim isn’t something to be ashamed of and to take down their attackers, and push the justice system to FINALLY take male rape and assault seriously.
I think she asked him the question precisely for that
WONDER WHY THOSE ALL DON’T LOOK LIKE THE SAME COLOR? BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT
OTHER THAN BEING PART OF THE SAME FAMILY OF BLUES, THEY ARE NOT ALL THE SAME FUCKING COLOR! WHY WOULD THEY ALL BE THE SAME FUCKING COLOR! DO YOU THINK WE JUST NAME NEW COLORS FOR KICKS!?!?!?

Reblogging for that last comment alone. Buwhahahahaha
unpopular opinion: i would’ve made the same decision adam did.
let’s talk about shiro’s illness. the cuff around his wrist administers electrostimulants to his muscles in order to keep them loose (i.e. they prevent his muscles from spasming while also helping to build up strength and prevent muscle atrophy). which means shiro has some sort of degenerative disease that is likely causing his muscles to weaken and atrophy. there’s also a lot of known research done on astronauts who have spent long periods of time in space that suggests skeletal muscles undergo atrophy as well as structural and metabolic alterations during space flight.
a regular healthy person going on a deep space mission to kerberos that will require them to be in space for months risks undergoing such muscle weakness and atrophy. now imagine shiro, who’s muscles are already compromised, going on that mission. it would absolutely be enough to kill him. or at the very least, make him so sick and weak that it will speed up the inevitable.
so to start, adam doesn’t assume that shiro is weak. adam isn’t underestimating shiro. adam isn’t minimizing his abilities. adam is thinking about shiro’s health and his life. shiro going to kerberos could’ve literally killed him or sped up his death. this is what adam was warning shiro about. this is why adam didn’t want shiro to go.
shiro believes risking his life is worth going into space, but adam doesn’t have to put up with that.
imagine being with someone who’s chronically ill and has a very short amount of time left on this earth. imagine being in a relationship with someone where every single second counts and every moment together needs to be treasured. now imagine that person purposefully trying to shorten that time, speed up their death, and engage in behavior they know will kill them. it’s self destructive.
now, shiro has every right to do what he wants. shiro isn’t wrong here. shiro has his values, and shiro values going into space over anything else. he’s willing to do whatever it takes to accomplish this. but adam is equally a part of this relationship. adam deserves to be with someone who is going to value their life and value their time together. not someone who’s going to purposefully throw more and more of it away.
adam never not once demanded that shiro not go. adam asked shiro to consider his own safety. adam told shiro that he wasn’t going to prevent him from going after his dreams. but adam wasn’t going to be a part of it because adam probably doesn’t want to be with someone who keeps cutting their life shorter and shorter on purpose. so he gives him an ultimatum. go if you want. but i’m not putting myself through this anymore.
your romantic partners aren’t obligated to put up with your self destructive behavior, whether it’s physical or psychological. that’s a lot of baggage to place on someone’s shoulders: “i’m going to do this thing that’s probably going to kill/hurt me and i need you to be okay with it.” no. that’s not something you can demand of people. i certainly don’t want to be with someone who cares more about risking their life than the longevity of our hypothetical relationship. it’s obvious that adam thinks the same.
again, neither shiro nor adam are wrong. they both just had different ways of living, different values, and different priorities. they just weren’t compatible. it was for the best if you think about it. shiro got to go into space, and adam was free from a relationship that was clearly distressing him.
so to answer your question: i think adam did the right thing for himself, and i sympathize with his position. i also sympathize with shiro who has the impossible choice of playing it safe because he’s sick or going after what he wants in the little time he has left. it’s a complicated situation without a clear answer. but neither one of them is in the wrong here.
